Omnimo 5 Official Launch

We finally released the long awaited 5th version of Omnimo. Now I don't need to tell you there are countless improvements in this release. This time we even have a changelog, thanks to the git log generator. But I might as well point out some of the key improvements:

Windows 8 Panels and Sidebar

If you use Omnimo to simulate Windows 8 then you're in luck. We added a bunch of Windows 8 styled Panels and a Sidebar, similar but quite different from the one in Windows 8. The Panels, depending on which theme you pick, will be 120px in the win8 theme, but you can resize them one by one or all of them from the settings.

Usability improvements

Now the gallery arrow is a menu that allows you to access the main galleries quickly. We also added Settings that allow you to change some of the core configuration in Omnimo. Improvements were made to the Style gallery as well. You can change the fonts of pretty much everything from there. One cool feature that was added is that you can close EVERYTHING on middle-click. Not just the panels, but also the config windows, galleries and apps!

Panel Creator

We had the Panel Creator before, but this time it's included in Omnimo and with more features. You can create 3 types of Panels - normal, Windows 8 and large icon versions. A convenient gallery is provided to save and manage your created panels.

Hubs and Kiosk Apps

Those are still quite experimental, but Hubs and Kiosk apps work in a similar fashion as the Windows 8 apps do. Basically a fullscreen website or a config. Make sure to check out Angry Birds and Cut the Rope from the Kiosk Apps gallery.

Bug fixes and performance improvements

Thanks to Xyrfo's insanely awesome omnimo tester script, we managed to find and fix hundreds if not thousands of consistency issues. Performance was also improved by adding updatedividers to panels which update in real time. The code is super clean and pretty now, everything is done by the books.

We included a way to save most of your variables and settings during the install, so if you have Omnimo 4.1 or earlier, your settings should be preserved. However you should make a backup of the WP7 folder just in case, if you have made any larger personal modifications.

There may be first-day bugs, if you encounter any please tell us and we'll fix them quickly.

Enjoy Omnimo 5.0

P.S. We have a Facebook page now, don't forget to Like us if you like Omnimo :)

1M Downloads and Github

This day marks a special milestone of achievement for the developers of Omnimo. A humble project that started almost two years ago reached one million downloads today. Most of you probably don't know that this project was supposed to be much smaller. When I came up with the early concept in the middle of March, I intended it to have approximately 12 panels and several text items. Nothing more. However, shortly after the concept, Xyrfo joined the project. And with our combined passion and ambition, as well as with some help from others, we managed to create the biggest Rainmeter suite ever. Xyrfo did some amazing stuff for the project. Things without which it would just remain but a dream of a madman. But he did it! For that, he deserves no less recognition than I do.

And of course, we would like to thank the community for all the support! You guys are awesome! Nothing motivates doing a project better than to see people use and enjoy the product. We're glad that we had the possibility to work without constraints. Something that could be taken away from us in the future (ACTA/SOPA etc ).

I asked Xyrfo to give a statement for this grand milestone, and here it is:

"...Why did I get dragged into this?..."
-Xyrfo* on January 26th
*Not cited, the quote is a guess, but approved by Xyrfo[1]

Github Announcement
To mark this special event, we created a github repository for Omnimo. This will make it easier for us to track issues, keep our development in sync, as well as open up the possibility for others to join the project. Currently we uploaded the existing version of Omnimo. I'm already starting to list recent bugs to fix for the next version. If you are on github and interested in taking part in this project, feel free to submit a pull request and do your modifications.

Still alive

So.. after quite a long break, I have finally found something to work on. A lot of you are probably asking - when is the new Omnimo version coming? It's difficult to answer that, because ~Xyrfo has formally abandoned development (and a long time ago, too), while I have limited resources on my part. My university studies have become increasingly time-consuming, therefore I wasn't able to do much in these few months.

However, now I have a winter break (or so to speak), which will allow me to work on some new stuff. I already gathered some ideas for the next version, but I'm still not sure whether or not it should be Omnimo 4.5 or 5.0 as (unlike Mozilla), each number should signify a milestone with major upgrades.

Still, it's early to talk about the new version. The next few months will be exciting for all of us because we'll be having Windows 8 public beta in February 2012. I can only assume we'll have leaks, screenshots and videos before that. I'll try my best to keep you Omnimo fans up to date with the latest Windows 8 stuff, but for now, there isn't really much to talk about.

The current version of Omnimo has all the resources needed to make your desktop look exactly like the one I just posted. The wallpaper is a desaturated and darkened version of this: [link] And the new Metro color is 0,159,194

Let me know if you have any specific feature suggestions for the next version of Omnimo, by the way. (and no, multiple pages can only be done with dexpot now) Thanks!

iTunes 10.5 problems and workaround

Anyone having problems with their media player modules can try this workaround: http://rainmeter.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=58503#p58503

That or update to the latest Rainmeter 2.2 BETA.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

4.1 Beta Testing today

We're proud to announce that 4.1 has entered the beta testing phase. Several lucky omnimo fans will get the highly anticipated update early and will hopefully report bugs in order to deliver a final high quality release. Just a reminder that 4.1 is quite a significant update - it includes a bunch of new panels (in form of two packs which you will be able to download from our website), lots of fixes and other various additions. You'll be able to either clean install Omnimo or simply Upgrade without overwriting any of your settings.

We hope to release Omnimo within a few days. I wanted to have it released before my birthday, but it looks like it will be released EXACTLY on my birthday :D

Stay tuned and thanks for using Omnimo!

4.0 Release

Yesterday, at about 22:10 GMT+2.0 time, we released the long awaited 4th version of this project. We dedicated a lot of our free time to this new version, which brings you more optimized panels, improved performance, a more centralized app system, bug fixes, languages and many new customization abilities. But the release is not yet fully completed, we are eagerly awaiting Rainmeter 2.1 to bring new features such as oAuth for twitter authentication (supertweet is a whole different story), finished NowPlaying plugin and other stuff. Chances that you are currently using Rainmeter 2.1 Beta for the aero effects presented in the new version of Omnimo. Anyway, we are carefully tracking all bugs at the moment, and will be releasing fixes periodically. If you found any bugs, let us know! Meanwhile, enjoy Omnimo 4 :)

Halfway in Omnimo 4 development

This was quite unexpected really, since we genuinely thought that Omnimo 3.1 would be our last version. We also thought that when we released Omnimo 2. I guess there's always room for improvement, and indeed we're improving a lot of things in this next version. We're focusing mainly on fixing existing stuff, making the experience more pleasurable, rather than mass producing stuff like we did before. Quality over quantity. Anyway expect a release within a few weeks, depending on how busy we are with other things that don't concern this project.
